School Book Buying Guide

A parent’s school-book checklist

The right book.
The right edition.

Similar covers and titles can hide important differences. Start with your school’s current book list, then check these details before adding a book to your basket.

Check these six details

  1. Grade and subject: match the school list. Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy are different subjects.
  2. Language of the book: English and Afrikaans editions can have different ISBNs. The language of a Maths textbook is separate from a language subject.
  3. Course: confirm Home Language (HL / Huistaal) or First Additional Language (FAL / Eerste Addisionele Taal / EAT).
  4. Book type: learner book, workbook, study guide, exam-practice book or teacher guide.
  5. Curriculum and edition: match what your school specifies. Check the publication or revision details when the list gives them.
  6. ISBN and quantity: compare the full 13-digit ISBN. Ask the school about substitutions before buying a different edition.

What kind of book do you need?

Book type Typical purpose Check before buying
Learner book / textbook Classroom teaching, examples and exercises. The exact title, grade, language and ISBN on the school list.
Workbook Practice activities, often with space to write. Whether it is consumable and whether answers are included.
Study guide / handbook Explanations, reference and revision alongside schoolwork. Grade range, curriculum and contents. It may supplement rather than replace the prescribed textbook.
Exam-practice book Revision questions or exam preparation. Whether worked solutions, memoranda or only final answers are included.
Teacher guide Teaching support, planning or answers where specified. It is usually a separate product. Do not order it in place of the learner book unless the school asks for it.

Huistaal of EAT?

Home Language or FAL?

The course describes the subject’s curriculum requirements. It is not something our short quiz can assign. Confirm the course with the school and match the book’s title and ISBN.

When a detail does not match

A different cover alone does not prove a different edition, and a similar cover does not prove the same book. Compare the ISBN and edition details. If a product offers language variants, select the correct one before adding it to your basket.

Do not assume a memo, teacher guide, online code or digital access is included unless the product description explicitly says so. Ask us to confirm anything unclear.

Where do I find the ISBN?

Look near the barcode on the back cover or on the copyright page. Your school list may also show it. Match the full number; do not use a title alone when the school specifies an ISBN.

Can I use my quiz result as a school book list?

No. The checks suggest topics to practise. Optional book suggestions are not school prescriptions. Your school list and teacher remain the reference for required books.

What should I send for a quote?

A clear photo or PDF of the current list, grade, subjects, languages and courses, ISBNs where given, quantities, and delivery town or collection preference. Mark books you already have.

We can help match your list.

Send the list before ordering if you are unsure. Availability, pricing and delivery arrangements are confirmed for your request.
